During the first week of June 2016, Ana Carolina González, researcher at the School of Finance, Government and International Relations and Latin American civil society representative on the International Board of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI), participated in the global meeting of this organization in Oslo, Norway.
EITI brings together mining and oil companies, governments and civil society organizations interested in advancing the transparency agenda in the sector. Through an international standard, countries voluntarily adhere to and are obliged to comply with economic disclosure requirements, industry payments, income management, along with contextual information.
Colombia applied for the Initiative in 2013 and in February of this year published its first report. These annual reports are expected to be validated in 2017.
At the last meeting of the International Council in Oslo, which the external researcher attended, it was decided that all EITI countries, including Colombia, should start working from 2017 on the creation of a public registry of the real owners of mining and oil companies with operations in their territories.
The registry will make it possible to reveal publicly exposed persons associated with these companies and to fight against corruption in the granting of areas and titles, as well as to avoid undue influence in the sector’s decision making.
